MODIFY HARMFUL HABITS

Consulting of Psychology and Health Montse Valls Giner

In the Consulting of Psychology and Health Montse Valls Giner, we also offer specific therapies for certain harmful habits. Some of these habits are defined as physical and emotional illnesses by the WHO (World Health Organization).

We could define it as "the state of physiological and psychological need for a substance or a practice, beyond voluntary control", but increasingly, they are also considered harmful, getting used to certain activities and / or people, for so much a definition more adapted to the reality of the moment would have to say: "it is a necessity towards a substance, activity or relation cause of the satisfaction, that this one produces to the person". The uncontrolled and essential use of any substance or activity must be considered as such. To have the feeling, that without this life has no meaning or the systematic dedication of an exaggerated time to an activity.

Modify Harmful Habits

There are therefore what are known as habits to substances (drinking, tobacco, narcotics, etc.) and without substance (gambling, cell phone, social media, sports, sex, etc.) and also emotional (couple, parents, certain person, etc.)

In substance habits, there is a physical component in addition to the psychological one, which is why, when trying to quit, significant adverse psychological and physical reactions can occur. In the case of being emotional, there is no substance, but there is "object" as the need is usually addressed to a particular person, so they are usually quite obvious. Both those with substance and the emotional ones are known, practically, all over the world and either by means of analyzes or by the observation of the behaviors of the affected one, relatively easy to determine. If they are without substance, it usually takes longer to detect them, since in many cases they are simply "exaggerations" of habitual behaviors, take as an example the exaggerated overuse of social media.

In the case of children and adolescents, these behaviors on social media, usually start with games, but it ends up being "very important" to know what they say about them at all times. In the games you feel "indestructible" people, who play with millions of players, who end up feeling like "friends", so they end up forgetting their real friends, those of real life, or VR, as it is known in the Nets. There comes a time when they confuse the game with life.

When the teenager has a “profile” in which he uploads his photos, he often doesn’t know where the boundaries are and doesn’t even imagine what can happen to these photos, which are often too intimate. There comes a time when if they have many “Likes”, they feel important and loved and if they don’t get them, empty and undervalued. There will come a time when the only important thing will be what happens on the net. If they have to stay one or two days without being able to connect to the network, there will be signs of irritability, nausea, dizziness, depression and existential emptiness.

Similar things happen between adults. In the networks they become other people and have different “roles”, which allows them to escape their daily problems. There comes a time when these “virtual friends” become the only important ones. Because of this, they end up abandoning their family relationships and real friendships.

Many times, in the case of adults, they contract with the networks for professional reasons. Over time, seeing that these professional ambitions do not materialize, they end up immersing themselves in a virtual world, in which they can show or feel like winners.

Deep down they don’t fool us, let’s look at the name “NETWORK”. It’s like launching the net and fishing for fish for a business, which moves billions of Euros a year.

As in habits with substance, (tobacco, drinking, etc.), it is not possible to quit it little by little. It must be left all at once. It will be the only way the person will live again in a real way and enjoying life.

In our consulting, the harmful habits that are treated are: drinking, smoking, gambling, new technologies such as mobile phones, the Internet, social networks, video games, etc. and sport, sex, people, etc. For other substances and sometimes drinking, therapies are only offered if you have previously undergone medical treatment or are undergoing psychiatric treatment.

The therapy will be adapted to the specific habit and psychological profile of the person and the most appropriate techniques and tools will be used to achieve rehabilitation in the shortest possible time.

If deemed appropriate to the patient's profile, hypnosis and relaxation techniques will be used, as they are the ones that usually offer the fastest response for this type of problem.
